Promoters, Club Owners
aah yes the world of the promoter. Promising the world but do they deliver? They always try to sell you a bill of goods like a car salesman when you walk on the lot but aren’t they preaching to the choir. They need to sell it to the audience, the fans, generate new fans. You see most promoters got into it because they enjoyed music (and money) but then the machine happens. Club owners are crying sad about not making enough money and their overhead, no one ever budgets properly for marketing/advertising and the all important street teams which in many cases is smoke and mirrors. Just because you sent out an e-mail blast or a myspace bulletin that may not even be read is your job done….. What happened to clubs playing some of the music at their own place before hand. I rarely hear that these days because everyone needs to have a dj spinning something that usually ends up being completely out of sink with the music of the night. Why don’t the dj’s announce upcoming shows? some do. i had one club manager tell me “oh i don’t think they would do that.” huh? Your running a business that requires getting your lineups and shows out to the masses. Replace the DJ if he doesn’t know how to speak into a mic. How about some info on your websites so we can actually hear what the upcoming band sounds like. Street teams are not just putting thousands of flyers out everywhere. maybe half. you need street teamers that talk alot, chat online, gossip, whatever it maybe. area socialites if you will. create listening parties for your upcoming events. get folks into the music your trying to represent. Word to the wise : get it on paper signed by the promoter or club ower when ever you can. i’d like to see bands hold club owners and promoters accountable. if a place is consistently BSing everyone don’t play there anymore. if a promoter is consistently the shady car salesman; don’t work with them ; they will go away. you’ve all seen it. end of the night when its time to pay and the beat down begins on how times are tough and the numbers aren’t there. When a promoter or club owner ask you to play there place or event why does that translate into you the band being responsible for all of the promotion of the show? I absolutely believe it to be different when you are requesting the show. Remember with out the bands and the artists they have no business. Work with people that are honest and truthful; be that yourself and the shitheads will go away. touring and playing shows is becoming the real money for the artists these days. protect the musicians domain. take control back. and stop lining their pockets and their noses.
